The Four Developmental Movement Patterns

Spinal Activation

Spinal Activation involves an awareness of your spine from the base of the tailbone to the top of the head. Spinal movement stimulates and supports the development of the brain stem. It is important that the spine develops in all directions: flexion, extension, lateral flexion, and rotation.

Homologous Movement

Homologous Movement involves symmetrical movement of both feet and hands at the same time. It develops a sense of the upper and lower halves of the body, supports and stimulates development of the limbic system (emotions, relationships and organization)

Homolateral Movement

Homolateral Movement relates to development of a sense of sidedness, both right and left. This is an important time for learning to shift weight from one foot to the others. it is also important for the brain to develop each side of the neo-cortex individually, before contralateral movement (integration) can occurs.

Contralateral Movement

Contralateral Movement involves opposite sides of the body working together(e.g., opposite arm and opposite leg). It integrates all the previous movement patterns.
